There are nine peaks in Idaho over 12,000', and Hyndman Peak is number nine on the 12er list at 12,009'. Two down, seven to go. I felt a little defeated after my escapade in the Pioneer Mountains a couple a weeks ago and failing to summit Hyndman Peak.

With routes ranging from class 2 to 4, this climb can be done in a day or broken up by camping overnight. Hyndman Peak is the tallest peak in the Pioneer Mountains, and the ninth highest peak in all of Idaho. It can be a busy summit, and is probably second only to Mount Borah amongst high peaks when it comes to number of visitors. Old Hyndman Peak looks unclimbable when viewed from Big Basin. The standard route climbs out of Big Basin into this higher basin, which is a sea of talus and broken rock. Cobb Peak is on the right.

Hyndman Peak - Hyndman Peak, at an elevation of 12,009 feet (3,660 m) above sea level, is the ninth highest peak in Idaho and the highest point in the Pioneer Mountains, Sawtooth National Forest, and Blaine Bukid ang Old Hyndman Peak sa Tinipong Bansa. Old Hyndman Peak makes up the second leg of what is commonly referred to as the “Trifecta” or "Triumvirate" of the Pioneer Mountains. Located 1 mile southeast of its big brother Hyndman Peak (12,009’), Old Hyndman demands its own respect despite being slightly lower in elevation. The trail is primarily used for hiking and running and is best used from May until October. Length 12.8 miElevation gain 4,950 ftRoute type Out & back Hyndman Peak is a huge, pyramid shaped mountain. It sits at the head of Hyndman basin, which is surrounded by big, rugged, 11,000+ peaks. The easiest route to the summit is class 2, a moderate scrambe after a 6 mile approach hike. I would say that about 10 people summit the peak on the average summer weekend. Hyndman Peak is located in the Pioneer Mountains in the Sawtooth National Forest. The peak lies on the boundary of Blaine and Custer counties.
